WHEN you think of football club nicknames, you may immediately think of ‘The Reds’ or ‘The Blues’ but if you take a minute to look around you can find some unusual and unqiue names.
Here are our top six picks for the most unique nicknames in the world of football:
6. THE GINGERBREADS – GRANTHAM TOWN

While this nickname isn’t the most out there, it is a very original name that no other club can boast. Grantham as a town is best known for Maggie Thatcher and Sir Isaac Newton but you may not have known that the town has a rich history of producing, you guessed it, gingerbread.
5. THE SEADOGS – SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC

The National League side base their nickname from their location and proximity to the sea. The term ‘Seadog’ has connotations (allegedly) of determination and hard work and for a club that overcame administration 19 years ago.
4. FLYING DONKEYS – CHIEVO VERONA

The Italian side make fourth on this list for their quirky nickname which all came about due to their rivalry with Hellas Verona. Their rivals stated that the only way Chievo would get promoted was if donkeys could fly, and after a promotion to Serie A the Italian side have adopted the name and made it their own.
3. POTATO BEETLES – ALEMANIA AACHEN

A side that was last in the German topflight in the 2006/07 season, they owe their nickname to their yellow and black striped kit due to its likeness to the insect. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have the fighting resilience of the Beatle as they find themselves in the Bundesliga 3.
2. THE MOODY DIVA – EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

Whilst you may think that this German team’s nickname is ‘The Eagles’ they also have a more niche and entertaining option. After many ups and downs in the clubs’ history the term ‘Moody Diva’ came about, with the club living up to its name in recent years.
- POOLS’ MONKEY HANGERS – HARTLEPOOL

Rightfully taking the number one spot in this list are Hartlepool who earnt their nickname after town residents hung a monkey during the Napoleonic Wars, thinking it was a French spy. Darlington, the club’s rivals, gave them this name and it has stuck ever since.
