THE Manchester Basketball club has etched a permanent mark in its short history by staging a defiant comeback to defeat Syntainics MBC 89-86, securing a spot in their first-ever European final.
Despite playing in the intimidating atmosphere of their opponent’s home arena, surrounded by a fervent “wall of yellow,” the North West side showed immense character to overturn a significant early deficit. The victory in the European North Basketball League Final Four represents a landmark moment for the organization, proving their ability to compete and succeed under the highest pressure on the continental stage.
The early stages of the game were grueling for Manchester, as a difficult shooting start saw them fall into a 14-point hole. Max Jones proved to be the vital lifeline during this period, carrying the offensive load with 16 points in the first half alone to keep the game within reach. His scoring barrage, capped off by a late triple before the break, ensured that Manchester trailed by only seven points heading into the locker room, providing the belief necessary to mount a second-half surge.
As the second half unfolded, Jordan Johnson took over the mantle of leadership from the bench. Known as the team’s spark plug, Johnson’s clinical shooting and ability to create his own shot dismantled MBC’s defensive rhythm. He scored a team-high 21 points, including back-to-back three-pointers that turned the tide and brought the game to a knife’s edge. His performance was supplemented by the grit of Tim Adetukasi and the interior presence of Duke Shelton, the latter of whom dominated the fourth quarter with 10 pivotal points to finally push Manchester into their first lead of the night.
The closing moments were a test of nerves that Manchester passed with flying colors. After Shelton and Adetukasi secured critical baskets at the rim, Gabe Osabuohien came up with a massive offensive rebound and a clutch free throw to establish a three-point cushion. A desperate final stand from the defense forced MBC into two missed three-point attempts as the buzzer sounded. Manchester now turns its focus to the final against Polish side Dziki Warszawa, where they hope to complete this historic run by bringing home their first piece of European silverware.
