Italy rejects plea that they replace Iran in the 2026 World Cup

As war continues in the Middle East, Paolo Zampolli’s proposal to FIFA that Italy replace group-toppers Iran at the World Cup this summer has been rejected by the Italian government.

As reported by SkySports, the Italian sports minister Andrea Abodi has said that it wouldn’t be appropriate for the men’s national football team to replace Iran in the 2026 World Cup, which will be taking place in North America between June 11th and July 19th.

Abodi hit back against the suggestion that they do so, saying:

“Qualification is done on the pitch.”

Paolo Zampolli, the man who came up with this radical idea, is a US special envoy and close ally of US President Donald Trump.

And if that isn’t telling enough, notice that he is also an Italian native.

Zampolli told the Financial Times:

“I can confirm that I have suggested to Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,

“I’m an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament.”

He then made a comment that raises serious questions about the integrity of the game, with global football fans already sceptical about the USA being allowed to host the beloved event:

“With four titles, they (Italy) have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”

This statement was possibly one of the most controversial of Zampolli’s talk, as it diminishes sporting achievement and fairness.

Qualifiers are a thing for a reason, and it is a format that is used to allow national teams to earn their spot in the biggest tournament in football.

Suggesting that regardless of whether they have earned it or not in a fair manner, they should be included because of their rich footballing history reeks of ignorance and blatant stupidity.

What message does this send to the rest of the countries that failed to qualify?

That they do not have the same privilege as a nation like Italy because they have not been fortunate enough to have been successful in tournaments before.

Furthermore, as revealed by the Italian sports minister, they would not want the country to be included because of controversies elsewhere, especially at the expense of another nation such as Iran, which has legitimately and fairly earned its place at the tournament.

A bold move from Zampolli; it will be fascinating to observe how this goes down amongst social media users online.

Iran remains in the World Cup, and Italy will not be attending.
