Fifa propose the 2030 World Cup to have 64 nations!

Fifa have proposed an idea to expand the 2030 men’s World Cup to 64 teams.

Next year’s World cup has already increased the number of participating nations up to 48 instead of 32 as a result of the United States, Canada and Mexico sharing hosting duties.

There will be 12 groups of 4 teams meaning that nations will play one less game than in previous tournaments.

Instead, there will be an extra round, starting with the last 32 rather than the round of 16.

This makes it the biggest edition of the tournament so far as there will be 104 games being played in 16 host cities over a six week period.

2030 World Cup- who and why have they proposed this?

The 2030 World Cup will be even bigger as the tournament is going to be hosted in six countries across three continents.

Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football association proposed the idea at a meeting of the Fifa Council that took place on Wednesday.

Moreover, he proposed that Uruguay should host the opening match of the tournament to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the first world cup that took place in Uruguay.

Alongside Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will co-host the opening matches because Argentina were runners up in the 1930 tournament and the South American confederation (Comnebol) is based in Paraguay.

After the opening matches Portugal, Morocco and Spain will be hosting the rest of the games of the tournament.

Fifa have also announced that the 2026 World Cup, much like the Super Bowl will have a half-time show with Coldplay announce to help plan the selection of artists.

All of these decisions made have split opinions within the public with a vast majority disagreeing with Fifa’s decision to expand the world cup to a larger scale. People also don’t seem to be too keen on Americanising the World Cup either.
