Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, questioned Mikel Arteta’s side after their frustrating 0–0 draw with Sporting CP, suggesting the side failed to match their manager’s pre-match intensity with their performance on the pitch.
Arsenal will now progress to face Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League but the general feeling in the Emirates last night was the performance was lacklustre.
The Gunners’ struggled to break down Sporting CP’s compact defence and a lack of cutting edge in the final third proved costly, with their attacking play often slow and predictable.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Henry pointed to a disconnect between Arteta’s words and Arsenal’s display. “I want to see that fire at the Etihad,” he said. “That’s what I want to see, it’s easy to talk, go there, at Man City, and deliver.”
He added: “I believe in what I see though, I believe in him Arteta, ‘the fire’, but when you talk like that you have to do it then. I didn’t see that tonight.”
Henry’s criticism reflects a broader concern around Arsenal’s ability to impose themselves against organised opposition, particularly in high-stakes European fixtures. Despite controlling territory, Arteta’s side lacked the urgency and creativity needed to unlock Sporting’s disciplined structure.
When asked whether this performance would be enough against Manchester City, Henry was unconvinced, laughing: “The Man City I’ve seen recently? We’re talking about the team that won four in a row…”
Arteta, however, struck a more positive tone post-match, insisting his side showed the right mentality. “100 per cent! Especially, I saw it in moments of difficulty,” he said. “This is a massive push to win the semi-final of the Champions League… we are going to enjoy it because we deserve it.”
Attention now turns to Sunday’s potential title decider, as Arsenal travel to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. With kickoff scheduled for 4:30pm, Arteta’s side will need to show the “fire” Henry demanded if they are to strengthen their Premier League title hopes against the reigning champions.
