AFC Wimbledon v Walsall League Two Play-Off Final match report 1-0: A Myles Hippolyte wonder strike wins it for the Dons at Wembley

Hippolyte’s wonder strike put AFC Wimbledon ahead in the play-off final with just one minute of the additional time left.

The chance fell to him when a Marcus Browne strike that was heading towards goal was blocked, he believed this struck a Walsall hand, not that he will care now.

Hippolyte struck the ball sweetly on the volley into the bottom right corner beating Tommy Simikin and leaving the keeper on loan from Stoke City with no chance.

Mat Sadler and Johnie Jackson both kept their same starting teams that helped them win their respective semi-finals.

However, Sadler was forced into an early change when Harry Williams had to come off for Oisin McEntree, who has only returned to full fitness himself.

McEntree came off injured in the win against Crewe Alexander on the last game of the season, which was the game that broke the Sadlers 13 game winless streak.

This streak was ultimately the reason they missed out on the automatic promotion spot.

As a 96th minute Bradford City goal sealed their fate on the last game of this season. But this final was their chance at redemption.

The first real chance of the game came after 15 minutes when the match winner Hippolyte, put a dangerous ball in behind for Matthew Stevens. However, it was collected by the hands of the goalkeeper on loan from Stoke City.

Five minutes later the hero of the day was involved again when the Grenada international had the first shot of the game after a lay off from Alistair Smith.

Walsall were caught trying to play it out from the back but the effort from Hippolyte sailed right passed the post.

The first thirty minutes were all AFC Wimbledon and they came very close to opening the scoring through Browne.

The 27-year-old striker found a bit of space outside the box and following a sharp turn struck the ball hard and low towards the bottom right-hand corner. The great shot was met by an even better save by Tommy Simikin.

The referee awarded three minutes of additional time, which was all the Wombles needed as they continued to pile on the pressure.

With one minute to go of the allocated added time the Dons struck with a sweet volley as Hippolyte buried the ball past Simikin.

Walsall thought they had dealt with the danger after their initial block, but Wimbledon were relentless and were awarded their goal after the dominant first-half display.

The second half began, and Walsall were eager to level the scoring at Wembley. They were awarded a corner two minutes into the first half.

The Saddlers were then so close to equalising when Nathan Asiimwe put a great ball into the danger area which was met by the captain Jamille Matt.

It looked like a certain goal if it wasn’t for Riley Harbottle who cleared the ball off the line saving his team and in due course winning them the game.

Upon the hour mark Mat Saddler looked to his bench where he brought on experienced winger Albert Adomah formerly of Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

He also brought on Levi Amantchi who was one of the goal scorers in the last game against Chesterfield.

Straight away Amantchi came extremely close,  a great ball from George Hall put him in on goal.

He needed to do much better to beat Owen Goodman, who had the joint highest clean sheets in the League this season.

Hall would soon be involved again as his great footwork spurred on the Walsall fans, but his shot was blocked for a corner.

Unfortunately for Walsall they could not create anything that would worry the Wimbles for the rest of the game.

The Saddlers chance at redemption was over and they would have to wait another season before making their six-year return to The EFL League One.
