MANY Scotland fans hearts sunk last night during their 0-2 defeat to Spain when they found out that Scott McTominay’s opener was ruled out for offside after an hour by VAR.
After McTominay’s goal Dutch referee Serdar Gozubuyuk turned to the game changing technology, which highlighted that teamate Jack Hendry was narrowly offside involved with play.
After the game Scotland manager, Steve Clarke, said;” McTominay’s fine free-kick is so close to being a super goal.
“Initially , Jack is a centimetre offside, then when he steps towards the keeper. they’ve asked the referee to look at it.”
Clarke further explained;” They’ve interpreted Jack as interfering with the keeper.
“I’m not sure the goalie is saving that shot from anyway.”
John McGinn, Scotland midfielder believes the keeper made a u-turn on his original decision ;” the referee decided its a foul.
“During the game he changes his mind to say it’s offside, not sure how clear that is.”
McGinn added;”that’s the thing that really stings.”
The Scots were unable to rekindle any scoring prowess afterwards, on 73 minutes Alvaro Morata put the hosts 1-0 up with a header from inside the box.
Within a quarter of an hour Spain doubled their advantage after Oihan Sancet beat Angus Gun in the Scotland goal from close range, meaning the visitors still need a point to qualify for the Euros 2024.
