With the World Cup fast approaching, the injury list of missing players is also growing, and here are three of football’s biggest names who will be watching from home rather than taking part in the biggest stage.
Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike suffered a devastating blow in Liverpool’s match against Paris Saint Germain, where the Frenchman ruptured his Achilles tendon, ruling him out of both the remainder of the season, and the World Cup with France. France assistant coach Guy Stephan called Ekitikes injury a “huge blow and a great loss”
Chelsea’s star Brazilian boy Estêvão is also looking like a serious doubt for the World Cup after suffering a full tear in his Hamstring in Chelsea’s match against Manchester United. “He was devastated,” Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior said after the match. “He was crying at half-time. I’m really devastated for him.”
Turkish wonder kid Arda Guler is also a doubt for the World Cup, after he picked up a hamstring injury, which had unfortunately ended his season. A club statement said “After the tests carried out today on our player Arda Güler by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the biceps femoris of his right leg. Pending evolution.” Turkey start their World Cup journey against Australia on the 14th of June, and they’re hoping that Guler will be able to make it back in time.
