The points were shared at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon, as Southampton drew with Newcastle 2-2.
Southampton opened the scoring in the ninth minute, as Rachel Brown received the ball down the right-hand side before crossing across the six-yard box into Molly Pike who had an empty net to tap it in to.
Ten minutes later, Southampton got their second of the game and Pike doubled her tally for the game, as she smashed the ball across goal into the top left corner, thanks to superb assist from Megan Collett.
Newcastle opened the scoring in the second half and got their first of the game in the 60th minute. A well worked piece of play from Newcastle eventually found the feet of Shania Hayles in the six-yard box who blasted the ball into the top left with her left foot.
Newcastle left it late to get their second of the game, having a flurry of chances throughout the second half. Amy Andrews scored from a set piece rebound to rescue her side a point at St Mary’s.
Newcastle had the first chance of the game, as Fran Stenson couldn’t claim a cross from the right-hand side. Hayles got her head to it but couldn’t direct it goalwards with power and it was cleared.
Both sides were forced into early changes as Hannah Greenwood came on for injured Deanna Cooper and Rachel Brown was replaced for the Saints by Milly mott after Brown’s strong 50/50 challenge.
Newcastle had their fair share of chances in the second half, as Emily Murphy had her 1v1 chance saved by Stenson.
Molly Pike almost got her third of the game, as her shot from the right hand side beat the keeper but smashed off the crossbar.
