SOUTHAMPTON midfielder Joe Rothwell has won February’s Championship goal of the month award following his beautiful volley in their thrilling 5-3 win over Huddersfield Town at St Mary’s Stadium.
Rothwell, 29, connected sweetly with the ball from the edge of the box as he rifled his effort into the top-left corner of the goal.
The loanee bagged a brace alongside goals from Southampton forwards Sekou Mara and Sam Edozie to help Russell Martin’s side secure three points against the Terriers after trailing by two goals in the first half.
He netted his second just a minute after his first with a thumping effort from close range.
The victory saw the South Coast side extend their significant club-record unbeaten run to 25 games.
However, the streak was brought to an abrupt halt when Martin’s side was defeated 3-1 by Bristol City at Ashton Gate the following Tuesday.
Rothwell has notched four goals from nine league appearances for the Saints.
The 29-year-old joined the club on a short-term loan from their South Coast neighbours, AFC Bournemouth, in the January transfer window.
He managed to beat three other Championship nominees to grasp the accolade.
The other candidates were: Yaser Asprilla – Norwich City vs Watford – February 13, Ryan Hardie – Sunderland vs Plymouth Argyle – February 10, and Josh Bowler – Watford vs Cardiff City – February 3.
The winner was the combination of supporters’ votes and a judging panel consisting of Sky Sports pundits Don Goodman and David Prutton.
