Republic of Ireland internationals shine for Birmingham City against Southampton

BIRMINGHAM city travelled to the South Coast in the Women’s Championship to try and strengthen their lead at the top of the table in hopes of promotion in the spring and they did just that.

In the last game before the break it was important for those who would be representing their country to play their best to put their best foot forward for international duty.

Republic of Ireland international Lucy Quinn got the first goal for the blues in the 11th minute.

Sneaking the ball behind goalkeeper Fran Stenson at the near post which was then met by a Megan Collett deflection and from there Birmingham City kept the game in their favour.

Fellow Republic of Ireland international Lily Agg got the second goal for the midlands club after a failed effort to save the goal from Fran Stenson.

Agg almost got herself a second as she struck the ball from outside the box but narrowly missed due to hitting the side post.

Defender Louise Quinn also shone alongside her fellow international team mates as she put in a faultless shift to keep the clean sheet before being substituted with injury in the 84th minute – she was then replaced by Martha Harris.

Although she managed to get the first goal for her side, Lucy Quinn had to be substituted in the 40th minute.

Ellie Mason came on for the midfielder after Quinn was experiencing discomfort with a potential injury that occured from a previous tackle.

Fran Stenson could be praised for her effort between the sticks as she also shrugged off an attempt by Simone Magill and pulled off quite a few game changing saves.

The closest Southampton got to a reply was through an Aimee Palmer free kick in the 65th minute by that was narrowly saved.

Controversially, the Saints could have had another chance earlier on in the game as Rachel Rowe was taken down in the box and to the disgrace of the Saints players – no penalty was given.

Goalscorer Lily Agg was awarded a yellow card after a late tackle in the 37th minute and teammate Neve Grace Heron was also handed a yellow card in the 91st minute.

There was a yellow card for Southampton and that went to Lucia Kendall.

Southampton will next travel away to The Valley to face Charlton Athletic on Sunday 3rd November where they will look to improve their form to move up the table.

Full time score: Southampton 0 – 2 Birmingham City.
