After losing out to high flyers Ipswich Town in their midweek affair, Millwall will be looking to make amends at The Den on Saturday against the Black Cats.
It was a night to forget for the Lions as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Portman road with all three of Ipswich’s goals coming in the first 40 minutes.
Their only goal came from summer signing Kevin Nisbet who scored in the 78th minute, but this wasn’t enough to spark any comeback for Joe Edwards side.
The 37-year-old’s Lions currently sit in 19th place and 2 points off relegation after, and have only recorded one win in their last five matches, this coming away against Sheffield Wednesday three weeks ago.
Yet it wasn’t only Saturday’s hosts who lost out on Wednesday, as Sunderland also had their own taste of defeat.
This coming against Huddersfield at the Stadium Of Light who secured a 1-2 victory over Tony Mowbary’s men.
To some though, the scoreline may not have reflected the script of the game, with Sunderland holding a possession average of 77% and recorded a total of 27 attempts opposed to Huddersfield’s eight.
This loss has dropped the Black Cats down into 11th place, so both sides will be looking to make amends at the Den this weekend and start a gruelling festive off in a jolly fashion.
Their last meeting at the Den, back in February, ended in a 1-1 draw with Millwall’s vice captain Jake Cooper scoring early on in the second half and Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin finalising the scoring in the 81st minute with a powerful header.
The 1-1 scoreline is the most common in the history of fixtures between the two, with three of their 40 meetings ending in the same fashion.
Adding to this, the earliest either side has seen victory at the Den was in 2004 when Millwall came out on top winning 2-0.
Indicating that the fixture needs igniting once again and with both sides looking to get back to winning ways, there is every chance that sparks will be flying in Saturday’s scrap.
Coverage of the fixture will be live on the Solent Solent sports news YouTube channel in our Soccer Saturday special with the broadcast starting at 2pm.
