SOUTHAMPTON vs Leicester has had some Premier League classics, one being with Leicester breaking the record against Saints for recording the biggest away win in the history of English top-flight football.
On a wet and windy Friday night down on the South Coast, Leicester won 0-9 against ex-Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side and set Premier League history, although that didn’t mean much.
Three seasons later, they are both getting relegated from the top flight into the Championship.
Although they both got relegated, Southampton did the double over Leicester that season, the Saints’ last ever Premier League win was in March 2022/23 against Leicester when Carlos Alcaraz secured all three points in that six-pointer of a game.
The two sides were not missing from the top flight for long, both getting promoted on their first time of asking, Leicester winning the league and Southampton winning against Leeds through the play-offs.
It’s never too early for a ‘six-pointer’ in the Premier League and fans are conscious this could be one.
Can Southampton’s Cameron Archer be the man they need?
The striker has had a tough start to life in Southampton, against Manchester United missing a penalty and three big chances against Ipswich which would have put them out of reach for a comeback.
Archer hit the bullseye away to Arsenal before the international break after being bought on in the first half as Ross Stewart was taken off injured.
The Saints striker gave them the lead after half-time in front of the away end.
The Englishman joined Southampton from Aston Villa in the summer for £15 million, he previously was on loan to relegated Premier League side Sheffield United.
Saints have only scored four goals in the Premier League this season and everyone – most of all Archer – will be hoping that his goal against Arsenal ignites a blaze of goals, which Southampton desperately need in their hope for survival.
Adam Armstrong was their hero in the Championship but they need someone to take charge in the Premier League.
Jamie Vardy is having a party
Jamie Vardy is already being a menace this season having scored two goals to help Leicester pick up some vital points.
Vardy has haunted Southampton, rolling back five years ago when he scored a hattrick in that 0-9 win.
In the Championship last season, Southampton didn’t have much luck against Leicester, and Vardy pounced on that bad luck.
Near the start of the season, Vardy scored in just 11 seconds at St Mary’s, and they then went on to win 1-4, nearer to the end of last season, Southampton lost 5-0 to the Foxes, Vardly slotted in their fourth.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek have formed a partnership over the last season, they will be looking to block the fox’s hunt toward goal.
Bednarek is the fourth-highest player in the league with the most blocks this season (11) and he will be looking to block Jamie Vardy at every chance Saturday.
Southampton has yet to pick up a win in the Premier League this season and has only picked up one point, which was at home to Ipswich, where Ipswich scored late on to pick up a point.
Last time out, Leicester beat Bournemouth at home, The Saints had lost 3-1 to Bournemouth before this.
