Lopez retains title in controversial fashion

Teofimo Lopez protected his WBO World light-welterweight title with a questionable unanimous points victory versus American rival Jamaine Ortiz staged in Las Vegas.

The American looked beaten in 12 rounds witnessing two judges score the match at 115-113 with one arguable scoreboard showing 117-111.

The decision proved to be unpopular with the crowd inside the packed out Michelob Ultra Arena.

Before sending a homophobic phrase towards the fans Lopez declared;” you all could boo all you want.”

He targeted American unified welterweight champion Terence Crawford after a catchweight bout.

A cocky Lopez flexed ;”I’m here, I’m ready . I’m hungry , I’m younger I’m prettier.”

The more youthful and flexible Ortiz made the most of his fighting abilities against Lopez outpacing him on the ring floor.

Despite having age on his side he struggled to make the most of it.

A devastated Ortiz stated:” I stuck to the game plan, I listened to my corner of the team.

I thought I was winning.”

Lopez further mentioned that his enemy was fighting defensively;” We cannot, for one second claim these people, these fighters that don’t wanna come and fight.”

The lack of consistency continues to defy the career of Lopez, although in June 2023 he clinched the light-welterweight title forcing Scotsman Josh Taylor into his first surrender.
