MIDFIELDER and Forward Kayleigh Green and Melissa Johnson stole all three points at Saint Mary’s in the Women’s Championship to take their team to top of the table.
With Southampton Women’s before the match sitting in third and Charlton Athletic sitting in fourth, both on 18 points only split by goal difference, the top 5 clash was an entertaining one.
1404 spectators were in attendance at St Mary’s to watch the clash between the two sides.
For the first half possession was back and forth as well as attempts on goal.
Southampton’s closest chance to breaking the deadlock in the first 45 was a strike by number 9, Katie Wilkinson, which was soon stopped by Charlton Athletic’s, Sian Rogers.
Going into the second half both teams were looking strong, the 0-0 deadlock was certain to be broken soon enough.
In the 46th minute, Southampton conceded a free kick to Charlton, which posed an immediate threat to the Saints.
Carla Humphrey stepped up to take the free kick and as she took it, the ball was met by none other than Kayleigh Green.
The Welsh international headed the ball past Kayla Rendall who despite her best efforts still let the goal in.
Even though the South Coast team were looking stronger on the ball after conceding, The Reds couldn’t find a way to reply to take back a point as the London side were hot on the ball.
As the extra time rolled on, it was imminent that a goal was coming but from either team.
In the 94th minute, Charlton found their way around Southampton again, with Melissa Johnson making it 2-0 to her club.
At full time it was – Southampton 0 – 2 Charlton Athletic.
Southampton next face Crystal Palace away before facing Arsenal at home in the Conti Cup.
Charlton Athletic go up against Sunderland next which could prove difficult as Sunderland sits second in the Championship.
