Hampshire Hawks sign franchise phenomenon for 2025 Blast

Dewald Brevis signs for Hampshire Hawks

SOUTH AFRICAN Dewald Brevis will be part of Hampshire’s T20 squad for the up-coming season, with the option to play red ball cricket in the Rothesay County Championship.

The 21-year old pack-a-punch batter has made a name for himself by having a strong strike rate, being a franchise favourite for T20 leagues around the world.

When he plays for the Hawks this summer, he will be wearing his seventh different franchise jersey since his T20 debut in October 2021.

The roster of teams he’s played for around the world include: Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI Cape Town in the SA20 along, MI New York in MLC, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots (Caribbean Premier League), and Morrisville Samp Army and New York Strikers (both in the Abu Dhabi T10).

From his current T20 career above, bar internationals, he has smacked 1281 runs in 57 innings, but it is not his average of 22.47 that catches eyes but instead his strike rate of 141.59.

He emerged on the scene at the 2022 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup, where lit up the tournament with 506 runs that included two centuries and three fifties in just six innings.

Since then, he has picked up the nickname of ‘Baby AB’ in reference to his fellow countryman AB De Villiers for both their short stature and un-orthodox stroke making.

Brevis has trademarked the ‘no look’ six where he smashes the ball over the boundary whilst keeping his head extremely still as his eyes remain aimed at the ground… it is very satisfying to watch!

“I’m hugely excited about joining Hampshire Hawks for the Vitality Blast this summer, the team has a great history in the competition, and I look forward to being a part of that.”

This is the second South African signing that the Hawks have made for the 2025 Vitality Blast, with 19-year-old South African wicket keeper-batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius joining the squad.

The left-hander was the top scorer of the 2025 SA20 where he scored 397 runs for Paarl Royals.

Brevis is excited to get to work with his international team mate:

“It’s great we have Lhuan-dre with us as well and hopefully we can put on a good show and entertain the crowd at Utilita Bowl on our way to reaching Finals Day and lifting the trophy.”

The Hawks’ first game in the Blast will be at home against Essex Eagles on Friday 30th May.
