UNDER the roof of Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, England’s clash with Denmark ended in frustration.
Harry Kane’s goal was cancelled out by a 25-yard rocket from Morten Hjulmand, leaving the Three Lions to settle for a draw.
Despite having chances, England’s play was disjointed and uninspiring, raising questions about the players’ understanding of their roles.
Captain Harry Kane admitted that the team struggles with pressing the opposition, adding to the familiar sense of pessimism among fans.
However, England’s spot in the knockout rounds is already secure. Albania’s loss to Spain in Group B ensured that, at worst, England will progress as one of the four best third-placed teams.
A win against Slovenia or Denmark failing to beat Serbia will secure first place in Group C, avoiding a potential clash with Germany in the first knockout round.
Even if things go awry, England have a high third-placed points total to fall back on.
Notably, the Three Lions could also go through a European Championships group stage unbeaten for the fourth consecutive time, having not lost their final pre-knockout match since Euro 2000.
Slovenia, managed by Matjaz Kek, have a glimmer of hope despite their struggles.
They were moments away from a historic win against Serbia, only for Luka Jovic to snatch a late equalizer.
Currently tied with Denmark in third place, Slovenia’s fate is still in their hands. A win in Cologne will see them through to the knockout stages.
Slovenia’s recent form suggests they are not to be underestimated. They are on an eight-match unbeaten run, with their last three games all ending 1-1.
It’s been over a year since they failed to score in a match. However, their record against England is poor, with five defeats in six meetings, including a 1-0 loss at the 2010 World Cup that sent England to the last 16.
Slovenia now hold the unwanted record for the most matches played at the European Championships without a victory, with four draws and one loss.
They will be looking to break this streak on Tuesday night and make history by securing their first win at a Euros finals.
