SOUTHAMPTON have pulled off a major coup by re-signing 36-year-old midfielder Adam Lallana on a one-year deal, marking his second stint at St Mary’s after a memorable career journey.
After four years with Brighton & Hove Albion, Lallana’s contract expired at the end of June, paving the way for a sensational return to his boyhood club.
The veteran playmaker is eager to rekindle old relationships and forge new ones in a squad filled with familiar faces and rising stars.
“I’m still in contact with quite a few of the boys,” Lallana revealed to Southampton’s official website. “A lot of the lads have been texting me recently, asking if the rumours are true – am I really coming back home? The excitement is palpable, not just from the fans but from my family and myself as well.”
Lallana’s homecoming is a nostalgic and strategic move for Southampton. The midfielder, who first donned the Saints jersey in 2006, brings a wealth of experience and leadership.
He boasts connections with current players like Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Sam Edozie, and he’s no stranger to Jack Stephens from their previous stint together.
“I’ve got a good relationship with several of the players,” Lallana added. “I know Taylor from the Under-21s, Sam Edozie, and I played with Jack Stephens here before.
I’m confident I’ll settle in quickly. With my experience and a wise head, I should integrate smoothly.”
Lallana’s journey began at Southampton’s Academy at the age of 12, and he made his senior debut in 2006.
His career took him to Liverpool in 2014, where he played a pivotal role in their 2019/20 Premier League triumph. He later moved to Brighton, where he added another 102 top-flight appearances to his name.
Overall, Lallana has racked up 291 Premier League appearances, scoring 33 goals and providing 32 assists, making him a seasoned and valuable addition to Southampton’s squad.
Lallana’s signing is Southampton’s first major move of the summer transfer window, following their thrilling Championship playoff final victory and promotion back to the Premier League.
The Saints are gearing up for an exciting season, and Lallana’s return is set to be a central storyline in their campaign.
