IAN Poulter has announced he will not be returning for LIV 2.0, becoming the latest high-profile golfer to leave the league.
The former world number five confirmed his exit on social media.
In a statement posted on X, he said: “I wanted everyone to hear it direct from me that I have decided to not move forward with being part of LIV 2.0.
“It was a tough decision and one I thought about and discussed at length with my family and team.
“Ultimately, the opportunity to spend more time at home with my family, reduce international travel, focus on senior golf and have the opportunity to pursue other interests was something that I felt was right for me at this stage of my life and career.”
Launched in 2022, LIV Golf was immediately touted as an attempt by Saudi Arabia to sportswash: improving their public image through sport.
Poulter, an original in the league and co-captain of the Majesticks GC team, did not shy away from the controversy surrounding the league but remained committed to the positives he takes from the experience.
He stated: “Clearly, LIV Golf has divided opinion, but to be part of the founding group that took world class golf around the globe, showcased our great game to a new audience, built a team brand in Majesticks GC, helped innovate tournament formats and establish a leading community impact program in Little Sticks, is something I will be forever proud of.
“Change is never easy and it’s fair to say professional golf has experienced plenty of it over the last few years. But I’ve always believed that change can create opportunity and ultimately lead to positive outcomes.
“There will undoubtedly be more changes ahead, but I am confident the game will continue to grow, evolve, and deliver the very best for golf fans around the world.”
Poulter’s statement came just two days after former Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen announced he was leaving LIV Golf.
