WHEN you think of Marshall Arts, your first thoughts may be Karate or Jiu Jitsu, not necessarily Capoeira (pronounced, cap-oh-AY-ruh).

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian Marshall Art and game that includes elements of dance and music.

Capoeira first appeared among Africans in Brazil in the 18th century with the game having connections to Angola.

In the 21st century, capoeira has become a global sport with groups appearing across Europe and the first World Championship which took place in Sydney.

The game is played in a circle known as a Roda and is guided by music created with traditional instruments.

While playing Capoeira the aim is to dominate the space of your opponent and synchronise yourself with the music.

The speed of the game is heavily determined by the music used while playing.

The lead instrument in Capoeira music is the Berimbau which is a single stringed musical bow.

The game is ended when one of the musicians holding the Berimbau determines the end.

Southampton has its very own Capoeira club.

Southampton Capoeira is a club for both beginners and experienced players, located at St Denys Boat Club.

Luke Upton travelled to the club to find out more and join in with one of the clubs Capoeira sessions.
