MICHAEL Carrick has insisted that the issue between Manchester United and Lisandro Martinez is finished, and the club have moved on.
Martinez had been in the headlines during the week, as he vented his frustrations about his club, following United’s 1-0 loss in the Champions League to Atletico Madrid.
The Argentinian defender told reporters following the game: “We did a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete, because many teams bring many players as well. I expect more, 100%. I expect more from our technical director.”
“I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night. Tonight is easy to blame the coach, easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?”
However, ahead of the Reds game against Leeds this weekend, United boss Carrick has been speaking to the press about the incident for the first time, after he initially avoided questions after the fixture on Tuesday by claiming he hadn’t fully read the comments.
“There’s A Really Good Feeling Within The Group” – Carrick Claims As Martinez To Be Part Of The Squad Against Leeds.
Lisandro Martinez issued an apology on social media during the week, and United officials told the press that the matter was no dealt with, but it didn’t stop journalists asking Carrick for further clarification about the incident.
Carrick said: “It’s done really. We’ve moved on from that. It was one of those things. He has come out and acknowledged the situation and as a group we have moved on. It is really not a drama for us as a group. The boys have trained really well, there was a really good feeling around training this morning.
Results-wise it hasn’t gone to plan of late but the spirit, the togetherness, again I said it but today was one of the better training sessions that we have had and you can see there’s a real sense and a feeling within the group that we want to do something about this situation and want to do something about it quickly.
We all understood the situation and what it meant. He made his statement and acknowledges that it was a mistake from him and that was it really. We have a really good feeling from within the group. We have a really good feeling within the club from the inside.”
Carrick was asked whether Martinez should have directed his apology towards the director of football, Jason Wilcox, but the boss insisted that the apology was “enough.” He later added that the defender would be part of the squad in their tie against Leeds this weekend.

Following Martinez’s outburst on Tuesday night, he later issued an apology via social media to fans.
He claimed he had met with the club’s leadership and manager, saying “it was a very positive conversation,” and that “The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.”
United currently sit 13th in the table after six games, having only just won once all season.
