England call up youngsters Rew and Jack as Bethell returns from injury

Warwickshire's 21-year-old batter Jacob Bethell is set to make his Test debut on Thursday for England against New Zealand.

JACOB Bethell will return for England’s white-ball tour of Australia with coach Brendon McCullum giving first international call-ups to young prospects Thomas Rew and Eddie Jack.

Warwickshire’s Bethell has not played since July after suffering a knee injury during the ODI series against India but is back as part of a near-full-strength squad for the three ODIs.

Ahead of the Test tour of South Africa in the winter, England have made five changes for the T20s meaning Somerset’s 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batter James Rew and Hampshire’s 21-year-old pace bowler Eddie Jack are included.

Speaking to the BBC’s Test Match Special podcast, national selector Marcus North commended the youngsters who have both already represented their country playing for the England Lions.

“Thomas Rew is an amazing young talent… he has great maturity around him for an 18-year-old.”

“Eddie Jack is another great example of a system that has been supporting and developing our fast bowlers. This is an exciting time – it’s always great when you get an opportunity to bring some players in.”

The tour begins on 13th November with the first of three ODIs in Perth and concludes with the last of five T20s in Canberra on 2nd December.

Just a week later, many of those included in the white ball squad – such as captain Harry Brook and pace bowler Jofra Archer – will then travel to South Africa to begin England’s Test tour against the Proteas.
