Wembanyama makes NBA history with unanimous Defensive Player of the Year award

Victor Wembanyama has made NBA history after being named Defensive Player of the Year with a unanimous vote — the first time it has happened in the award’s 43-year history.

The Victor Wembanyama, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs, received all 100 first-place votes, underlining his dominance at just 22 years old.

The 7ft 4in French star also becomes the youngest winner of the award and only the second player to claim it within his first three seasons in the league, following Spurs legend David Robinson.

Wembanyama’s impact has been undeniable this season. He led the NBA in blocks with 3.1 per game for a third consecutive year, while also posting career highs of 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

Reacting to the achievement, Wembanyama said: “I’m super, super happy to win this award and actually super proud to be the first ever unanimous [winner].”

His performances have also helped the Spurs to a standout campaign, finishing the regular season with a 62-20 record and the third-best defensive rating in the league.

German NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki praised his influence, saying: “I’ve never seen anything like it. His defence is so good that he changes the game just by being on the court.”

Wembanyama edged out competition from Chet Holmgren, who finished second, and Ausar Thompson in third.

The award adds to what is already shaping up to be a remarkable season for the Frenchman, who is also in contention for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award.

He carried that form into the play-offs, scoring 35 points on his debut as the Spurs beat the Portland Trail Blazers.

With his combination of size, skill and defensive dominance, Wembanyama is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most influential players in world basketball — and this historic accolade may only be the beginning.
