SURF lifesavers this summer will have the chance to compete in the first ever GB Surf Series.
A three round event, on iconic beaches in the South West, lifesavers will battle it out in points score to be crowned champions.
Anna Smee, the CEO of Surf Lifesaving GB spoke to Solent Sports News: “This year we will host the first ever GB Surf Series.
“We hope this can attract huge financial sponsorship for our athletes.
“Lifesaving is about saving lives at sea and keeping people safe, but we also provide great athletes.”
Kicking off in Porthcawl, Wales, on the 6th June, athletes will compete in swim, board and ski races.
Capped off with an iron which is the three disciplines combined, similar to a triathlon.
That format will carry on throughout the summer.
Fistral beach in Newquay, Cornwall, hailed as UK’s home of surfing, will host round two on 27th June.
The finale will take place at Portreath on 25th July, home of the UK’s most historic and successful lifesaving club.
The series will follow a similar format to the World Ocean Series, which is raced over nine months in five countries.
Over one million AUD in prize money is won in the World Ocean Series, which is headline sponsored by Shaw and Partners Financial Services.
SLSGB is now home to over 11,000 members and provides huge numbers of lifeguards to the RNLI each summer, keeping people safe in the water and on the beach.
