IT’S 50 years since Southampton won the the FA Cup thanks for Bobby Stokes strike which saw them defeat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Saints FA Cup triumph, the South Coast side have been wearing a tribute kit to that famous day during this season’s competition.
Tonda Eckert’s side host Arsenal in the quarterfinals of this years edition of football’s oldest competition with a trip to Wembley lying in wait for the winner.
In the previous round, Ross Stewart’s stoppage time penalty was enough for Saints to knock out Premier League side Fulham at Craven Cottage, following previous victories over Doncaster Rovers and Leicester City.

Having taken over from Will Still on 5 December 2025, Tonda Eckert has the opportunity to lead Southampton to their second FA Cup success 50 years on from their first triumph.
Previous Silverware
Since Lawrie McMenemy led his side to victory on 1 May 1976, Southampton have had mixed success when it comes to silverware.
The Saints had to wait 34 years to claim their next piece of silverware as Alan Pardew’s side secured the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley.
Goals from top scorer Ricky Lambert, Adam Lallana, Papa Waigo and Michail Antonio helped the South Coast side record a 4-1 victory over Carlisle United.
Southampton’s went on to secure back-to-back promotions the following year which saw them return to the Premier League for the first time since 2005.
Under the management of Claude Puel, the Saints travelled to Wembley once again for the League Cup final as they took on Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.
The Hampshire side fell to a 3-2 defeat in controversial circumstances following a contentious refereeing decision which saw Manolo Gabbiadini’s opening strike ruled out for offside.
The Saints next stab at silverware came under the guidance of Russell Martin in the 2024 Championship Play-off Final against Leeds United on 26 May 2024.
Adam Armstrong’s first-half strike was enough to secure the trophy for the Saints and promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
