Will Steve Evans stay as the Bristol Rovers manager?

Bristol Rovers will be looking to keep hold of manager Steve Evans after his positive transformation in a short space of time at the club.

Steve Evans was appointed as Bristol Rovers manager on the 16th December 2025. He took over from previous manager Darrell Clarke.

Having only just been relegated from League One the season before, the downfall continued for the West Country outfit.

Evans took over a Rovers side that were limping into non-league football, winless in 13 league matches, losing 12.

When Evans was appointed as Rovers boss, he signed a deal until the end of the season. He made it clear fairly early on that he wouldn’t drop down into the National League should Rovers get relegated.

Since then he has helped steady a wobbling ship, with The Pirates winning four of their last five games, drawing one and narrowly losing to the league leaders Bromley.

The Memorial Stadium has also become somewhat of a fortress, with five wins in their last six home matches.

The Gas now sit 19th place in League Two, 10 points off the relegation zone and looking to further progress up the table.

With the end of the season nearing, Evans’ future at Rovers has been a topic of discussion, with other clubs circling.

In a press conference a couple of weeks ago he was asked whether that thought process has changed.

He said: “No, it’s still the same. I have no need to be at Bristol Rovers for salary or money. I’m here for heart and desire, and wanting to win.

“I understand that at the end of the season, there’ll be a time for me to reflect, and a time for the owner to reflect, and then we can decide if we want to go forward.”

After the recent turn of form and Rovers edging closer and closer to safety, the topic was brought up again.

“No, listen, I just need to assess it at the end of the season,” the head coach said.

“I have to allow my Chairman and the board of directors to make the decisions that’s right for them at the end of the season, and I have to make the decision that’s right for me and my family.

“That’s not putting it off. It’s just all I’ve said to the Chairman since I first came in, and he’s repeated it back to me: just let’s secure our safety, and then we can sit down and see what the plan is going forward.

“If it’s the right plan, do I want to be a Gashead? The fact I live here six or seven nights a week says yes.”

Bristol Rovers will certainly want to keep hold of the vastly experienced manager for next season and beyond. His nine promotions speak for itself.

It would be somewhat of a coup for the Gas given his previous track record in this league, including two promotions from League Two with Rotherham and more recently Stevenage.

Evans is known as a promotion and rebuilding specialist which Rovers have been in desperate need of. They will be looking to replicate a similar story to the remarkable transformation he did at Stevenage.

Provided Evans stays on to sign a new deal and the Gas survive, you feel as though Rovers would be immediate promotion contenders for next season.
