International Women’s Day: inspiring women to get into sport

UNIVERSITY sport is open to many, but the representation of women can continue to improve, especially in positions of power.

Solent University’s Badminton Team has open training sessions but are unable to field a Women’s team into BUCS competitions.

Despite not competing in BUCS fixtures, a number of women go against the grain by becoming role models for inspired University students that want to make their mark on sport.

Eva Cumiskey is one of those women, as Social Secretary, she organises weekly social events and promotes the society across numerous social platforms.

“I think it’s really nice as a group, we’ve had a good few girls that have joined the team so it’s nice to build upon friendships and play badminton together.

“It’s really nice having a women’s community. especially for sports and getting involved with exercise because it’s so good for out health.

“Seeing the girls-only gym [Fit4Her] opening in Southampton, that’s nice that they’re bringing in a women’s-only community and we should have more women-orientated roles and sports societies dedicated to women.”

Having joined the society in October, Eva has made her mark already on the team and it’s society as a whole.

Lottie Farndon, also a new member, originally joined the society because of Eva’s influence.

“She always talks about badminton in a positive way, posts lots on the social media, making it more appealing for me to join.”

As International Women’s Day has just passed, hopefully mroe awareness is spread on the inclusion of women into University sports teams.
