LOCAL Southampton club, Sholing Football Club, brought walking football to the Mortgage Decisions Stadium once again, on the morning of Tuesday 10th February.
The club, who play in Portsmouth Road, have been running a number of walking football sessions, for the older population, who still enjoy playing the game casually, without the serious nature found in competitive competition.
However, this time, for some of the players, they got to fulfill a dream by sharing the pitch with Southampton Icon, Matthew Le Tissier, who is an associate director at the club.
Le Tissier’s exploits in a Southampton shirt are well known. Courtesy of him, the ball found the net 209 times, 47 of those came from the penalty spot, only missing once from twelve yards.
“Le God”, got involved with the club in 2024 to help out current Boatmen joint-manager, Paul Doswell, who he played under, during a brief spell at Eastleigh after leaving the pro game:
“I’d only played maybe 10 games. It wasn’t a huge amount, but I was doing it as a favour for Doswell.
“I’ve always kept in touch with Doswell down the years and when he got involved with Sholing and he asked me if I’d come up there and get involved a little bit, I was more than happy to do that.”
“Join Sholing FC Associate Director and Saints legend, Matt Le Tissier, at next Tuesday’s walking football session.
“Our walking football is on every Tuesday 9am-10am and Thursday 2.30pm-3.30pm so come along to keep active and make friends!
“Over 55s, Mixed sessions, All abilities welcome, First session free then £5 pay as you go.”
The Boatmen are the latest to get involved in the game where the popularity and impact on the older generations is so big.
A prime example is The Walking Football Association’s Super League, includes men and women’s teams and such for over 60’s, over 65’s, over 70’s, and even a group for 75/80 year old’s.
