THE Guinness Six Nations start on Thursday evening with holders France taking on Ireland in Paris at the Stade de France.

In the opening round of fixtures Italy host Scotland whilst Wales travel to the Allianz Stadium to take on championship contenders England.

There were some intriguing selection decision made by Steve Borthwick yesterday morning as he announced his England side for their championship opener against Wales.

Following the news that Maro Itoje missed the start of England’s tournament preparations in Girona due to attending his mother’s funeral, the England skipper will feature from the bench.

Speaking to BBC Rugby Union Weekly Podcast, Steve Borthwick said: “We all feel for Maro and his family after the very sad loss of his mum.

“We made the decision for this game that it’s best for him to start on the bench.

“I think he is going to make to have a massive impact. I also know the crowd, when Maro comes to the touchline, will show their appreciation and how much they care for him and his family with a big roar.”

As a result of this, Jamie George will captain the side in Itoje’s absence alongside vice-captains Ellis Genge and George Ford.

The England side also includes Fraser Dingwall and Tommy Freeman in the centres with Henry Arundell starting on the wing as Tom Roebuck continues his recovery from injury.

England face Wales at the Allianz Stadium at 16:40 on Saturday.
