University Societies – worth the hype or a waste of money?

Five Solent University hockey players stand on the hockey goal line as the referee blows his whistle.

SOLENT University has a range of sports on offer for students to add to the university experience, but many students believe things need to change.

Whether it’s badminton or football, society members have to commit a level of time and money towards their society.

From membership fees to social event outfits, financially, sport societies have an added layer of pressure for students when signing up as a fresher.

Marcus Mansfield, a Solent University student, has experience in a number of societies but this year has prioritized hockey.

“Memberships… £200, because I included the gym memberships and then probably outfits wise [..] £10, so about £210 so far

“Sometimes with buying outfits for socials, it costs quite a lot so then you’re sort of trying to make up stuff with clothes you already have, but you get fined for it […] it’s all a good laugh.”

Sports societies often have a habit of creating social events to brings their members closer together and build stronger relationships.

Some of these socials, can result in initiations for freshers who have just joined the society and can seem extreme.

“The initiations… I’d personally scrap them, obviously I know it’s tradition and stuff, my hockey one wasn’t that bad.”

On the opposite side of the coin, many societies, like the newly formed darts society make it an affordable option whilst offering regular social events.
