Southampton continue their run of impressive form, beating close rivals.

AFTER their emphatic away win against WSL 2 giants, the South Coast side have continued their monumental run, losing just one in their last six fixtures – putting them in 5th of the WSL 2 and in a good position in their Women’s League Cup group.

It all started on the opening day of the WSL 2 where Southampton at home, thumped newly promoted Ipswich Town, 4-0.

Goals from Atlanta Primus, Amy Goddard and two from Mary Bashford helped all 3 points be secured in front of a home crowd.

The Reds travelled to London the next week to play Crystal Palace who had just been domoted back down from the WSL 1, this game then became an 8 goal thriller.

It was like a game of tennis, watching the teams take it in turn to score, at one point Saints were 4-3 down but in the 63rd minute, Megan Collett stepped up for her side to take them to a draw.

The other three goals were sent into the back of the net by, Michaela McAlonie, Ellie Brazil and Tara Bourne.

Their only defeat so far this season came up next and they almost managed to share the points with Bristol City but a familiar face ruined that possibility.

In the 88th minute, it was still 0-0 at St Mary’s and Bristol City were pushing for a winner so they could defeat both South Coast teams in the WSL 2, in two consecutuive gamedays.

Ex-Southampton forward, Lexi Lloyd-Smith was the one to steal all three points from her former club and the home side were left wondering what went wrong and focus turned to the next week.

The team re-grouped and managed themselves a draw at home against northern side, Sunderland.

The visitors sent the ball into the back of the net first through Katy Wilson who put her team 1-0 up in the 19 minute.

It took the Saints until the fourth minute of added time to the first half to find a reply to Sunderland’s goal – Chloe Peplow managed to salvage a point for her side.

Back on the road it was for Southampton – to play League giants, Birmingham City.

This win meant that it dampened the Blues chances of promotion at the end of the season, putting pressure on them to maintain a 100% win record from now – but it also gives Southampton a chance to see themselves in a promotion race.

Goals from Atlanta Primus and Chloe Peplow helped this effort.

Southampton gave Portsmouth a game to remember as they beat them 1-0 in the first of two South Coast derbies this weekend – with the other occuring in the league.

Michaela Mcalonie sent the ball flying over Portsmouth keeper, Comfort Erhabor to give her team the lead.

Overall, the Reds had much more time on the ball, with more passes and more chances on goal, proving that they are the stronger and better team on the South Coast.

Southampton will take the short trip down the road to Portsmouth this weekend – another South Coast derby where they will be looking to make it 2 from 2 derby day successes.
