CAROLINA Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young has been presented with a fresh chance to silence his critics in the NFL.
On Monday, Panthers head coach Frank Reich announced that he would hand over play-calling to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.
The change in duties will mean that Young and his offence will have different play options and routes they can run in games.
Reich’s side selected the quarterback from the University of Alabama as the number one pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
However, the quarterback’s start to life in the league has been far from ideal, with the head coach possessing play-calling duties.
Young gained plaudits in college for his elite playmaking abilities, hence why Carolina were keen to trade up to the number one spot to secure him.
However, many people believe that the 22-year-old will not shine in the NFL as he is one of the shortest quarterbacks in the league with a height of 5ft 10in.
He and the Panthers started the season with six successive defeats, with a very bland offence that has struggled to hit the ground running.
This has caused the 61-year-old to hand over play-calling for Young to Brown, who was hired in the offseason.
The 22-year-old rookie has shown pleasing progress throughout the season so far after a very slow start but has only averaged 5.3 yards per attempt.
He has also been sacked 16 times in six games, suggesting that protection from his offensive line has been mediocre, making his job as the quarterback a lot harder.
The offensive coordinator now having the reigns over Young’s play options could give the rookie more freedom to show his creativity and skill, which could help his team secure their first victory of the campaign.
