THE Premier League is currently on the right path to gain an extra Champions League spot ahead of next season based on the performance from English teams in European competitions.
An additional two leagues in Europe will be rewarded with an extra spot for the 2025-26 Champions League campaign as a result of their coefficient rankings.
England currently lead the coefficient rankings table, UEFA’s official ranking system for European Clubs competing in EUFA competitions, meaning that a fifth place finish in the Premier League table would ensure Champions League qualification next year.
How the coefficient table currently stands?
Uefa’s current coefficient rankings
Country | Points | Club left in Europe | |
1 | England | 106.6 | 6 from 7 |
2 | Italy | 93.4 | 5 from 8 |
3 | Spain | 89.1 | 6 from 7 |
4 | Germany | 83.9 | 5 from 8 |
5 | France | 70.0 | 3 from 7 |
How countries earn an additional European spot?
Each league in Europe earns a coefficient ranking based on how their teams perform in UEFA’s three men’s club competitions: the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
Points are earned through match results with teams earning two points for a win and one point for a draw.
The amount of points each domestic league earns is worked out by the amount of points each club in that domestic league earns.
For example, if clubs in Spain had 90 points, that would be divided by the number of clubs that league has in Europe (seven) to give Spain a coefficient of 12.85.
The countries which finish in the top two of the coefficient table earn an additional spot for the Champions League next season.
Which English team could get the spot?
If the Premier League earn an additional spot, the club that finishes fifth will qualify for the 2025-26 Champions League campaign.
Currently Bournemouth are placed fifth in the League, one point behind champions Manchester City in fourth.

Andoni Iraola’s team moved above Chelsea and Newcastle last weekend following a 3-1 victory over Southampton, as their rivals suffered defeats against Brighton and Man City respectively.
Only 10 points currently separate the clubs from third to 10th which is the second closet points gap in Premier League history at the same stage according to BBC Sport.
