MATCH REPORT: Juventus v Arsenal, Women’s Champions League

The group stages returned last night and Juventus hosted Arsenal at Stadio Comunale Vittorio Pozzo Lamarmora, with the game ending 4-0 to Arsenal.

Juventus starting XI: Pauline Peyraud Magnin, Martina Lenzini, Viola Calligaris, Estelle Cascarino, Valentina Bergamaschi, Arianna Caruso, Eva Schatzer, Lisa Boattin, Sofia Cantore, Amalie Vangsgaard and Chiara Beccari.

Arsenal’s starting XI: Daphne Van Domeselaar, Emily Fox, Leah Williamson, Steph Catley, Katie McCabe, Kim Little, Lia Walti, Caitlin Foord, Frida Maanum, Beth Mead and Alessia Russo.

The game started in Juventus’ favour as Cantore took the risk, early into the second minute, to try and give her side the lead but Van Domeselaar made the effort to clear the ball as Arsenal’s back line was caught offguard.

A few minutes later Arsenal got their chance to take the lead, Katie McCabe took the shot but nothing came from it as Peyraud Magnin tipped the ball over the back of the net.

A cross by Boattin in the 20th minute was the closest chance the home side got to a goal but it was headed away by Little to ultimately end up in the hands of Van Domeselaar.

Two Arsenal attempts in quick consession came next, one from Russo and other from Fox but both efforts were saved by Peyraud Magnin.

From there Arsenal took over the match and kept Juventus fairly quiet.

In the 37th minute, a team effort goal came Arsenal, starting in defence from Williamson, then up through midfield by Little, taken over by Foord who assisted Maanum to put the ball in the back of the net.

Williamson came very close to doubling the Gunners lead from a McCabe corner but Peyraud Magnin got there just in time.

13 minutes into the second half came to first yellow card of the game, handed to Catley after she pulled down Vangsgaard on the flank.

On the 59th minute mark, both teams made a double substitution.

Stina Blackstenius came on for Frida Maanum and Mariona Caldentey replaced Beth Mead.

Barbara Bonansea took over from Beccari and Krumbiegel was substituted on for Bergamaschi.

Another Arsenal free kick came in the 64th minute but was sent over the crossbar by Williamson.

One of Juventus’ 12 shots came a minute later after a run was made by Vangsgaard.

With just over half an hour left to go, Juventus’ only yellow card was handed out to Schatzer for bringing down Russo during her run.

Shortly followed Arsenal’s second goal and all praise goes to substitute Stina Blackstenius. After making a run on her own with no backup, she danced around the home side’s defence to slot the ball home.

Following the goal, Blackstenius’ attacking partner, Russo was substituted off for Swedish international, Lina Hurtig.

Champions League Veteran, Caldentey, was the next to add to Arsenal’s scoreline, she sent the ball flying into the top of the net after a brilliant sequence of play by Hurtig.

With six minutes to go of normal time, Arsenal used their final two subsitutions, Laia Codina and Kyra Cooney-Cross came on for Emily Fox and Lia Walti.

Two minutes later, Arsenal improved their lead through Catlin Foord, making it her sixth goal in Europe so far this season.

Juventus had their final attempt in the game just before full time with a corner but nothing came from it.

Juventus could have a chance to redeem themselves when they travel to Emirates Stadium next week.
