Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea will look to continue their impressive start to the season against an out of form Arsenal team, who come of the back of two 1-0 defeats against Newcastle Utd and Inter Milan.
The fixture has guaranteed goals over the years as well as some of the Premier League’s most memorable moments.
Andre Marriner mess up:
In what was Arsene Wenger’s 1000th match in charge of Arsenal, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea handed out a 6-0 thrashing at Stamford Bridge, however the game was remembered by a bizarre red card decision by referee Andre Marriner.
Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs was sent off by Mariner for a hand-ball on the line which denied Chelsea a clear goal, Mariner mistakenly identified Gibbs as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (the player who committed the foul) resulting in the wrong player being sent off.
Eden Hazard solo brilliance:
One of the most iconic goals in Premier League history was scored by Eden Hazard when Chelsea hosted Arsenal back in 2017.
Antonio Conte’s blues were marching towards their fifth Premier League title when they faced Wenger’s men, Chelsea won the match 3-1 and Hazard scored one of the goals of his career.
Receiving the ball at the half-way line, the Belgian danced his way past four Arsenal defenders before tucking the ball into the corner past his former team-mate Petr Cech.
Van-Persie Hat-Trick
Robin Van-Persie’s world class display against Chelsea in 2011 helped his side to a famous 5-3 victory at Stamford Bridge.
The Dutchman scored a hat-trick for the Gunners ripping apart Chelsea’s defence which included John Terry and Petr Cech.
Arsenal wouldn’t beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge again for another ten years in the Premier League when they won 1-0 in 2021.
Mourinho and Wenger clash:
A year on from Chelsea’s 6-0 thrashing over Arsenal in 2014, Chelsea welcomed Wenger’s men to Stamford Bridge once again.
With boss Wenger looking to get revenge after his 1000th match humiliation against Mourinho’s blues, things got heated between the two coaches on the sidelines with Mourinho captured hanging onto the Frenchman’s tie.
The managers had to be separated by fourth official John Moss following confrontation, with Wenger unhappy with a decision by the referee after Chelsea beat his side again 2-0.
