Preview: Pirates require another huge home performance to secure third consecutive league title.

Poole Pirates 2023 squad

It must be getting boring for Poole Pirates as they host another Championship Grand Final at Wimborne Road, any thing but another league title for the Dorset outfit would be a failure.

The back-to-back Championship winners face an old rival in Glasgow Tigers, who they sent to Davie Jones’ locker in the 2021 Grand Final.

Two seasons prior Neil Middleditch’s side sent the Tigers packing back to Scotland with a 96-84 aggregate win.

They will be hoping to turn the tide on Wednesday after Monday nights disappointment away to the Tigers, losing 52-38.

The Pirates overcame a ten point deficit in 2021 but will need to collect more points on Wednesday if they are to win once again.

Glasgow’s stellar home performance leaves the Pirates 12 points to claw off the Tigers at home.

Former British Champion Chris Harris led the Scottish side in points with 14 and captain Tom Brennen following close behind with nine.

Pirates captain Steve Worrall and Richard Lawson led the Dorset outfit in points scoring nine each over the course of the meeting.

Its definitely not over for poole as they finished the league undefeated at home and recorded their biggest victory in six years with 64-26 win against Plymouth Gladiators back in June.

It’s been another successful year for the Poole as newly appointed captain Worrall has followed in his close friend’s footsteps taking them back to the Grand Final.

Danny King finished his tenure as Pirates captain last season with the league and cup double.

Worrall has the chance to emulate this with a cup final with Scunthorpe Scorpions winning away at Redcar after a dominant home first leg.

Poole finished the season top of the Championship once again s they prove to be a force of nature in the second division.
