Match Preview: Merthyr Town vs Winchester City

WINCHESTER City travel to Pen-Y-Darren Park as they take on Merthyr Town in a Southern Football League, Premier Division South clash.

Merthyr currently sit fourth place in the league with Winchester behind them in 14th.

Last time out, the Citizens featured in a narrow defeat to Harrow Borough at the Charters Community Stadium and ended the game with 10 men.

A goal from Conor Lynch could not help them to overturn a 2-0 deficit with the game ending 2-1 to the away side.

Manager Craig Davies was furious with his team as he felt they were “not good enough” after their defeat so this should fuel the players to perform in this tough fixture.

Merthyr Town come into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Hayes & Yeading United with a strike from Liam Angel.

Last season, Merthyr got the better of Winchester with a 2-2 draw in the south of England, and a 5-2 win near the southern side of the Brecon Beacons National park.

The Reds have not beaten The Martyrs since an FA Cup qualification match in 2018 where they won 4-1 with Jamie Barron, who is still at the club, scoring once.

Barron might not feature in tonight’s game after picking up a red card against Hanwell Town two games ago.

Another City player who may not play is centre back Pip Nolan also receiving a red card for a last man challenge on the halfway line against Harrow.

This gap in defence could be filled by new signing Jordan Rose as he looks to continue his impressive start to life as a Citizen.

The game kicks off at 19:45, Tuesday 24th November.
