London Spirit move into playoff spots after they “cash in” on a lacklustre Manchester Originals performance

London Spirit chased down an “awkward” total of 113 against the Manchester Originals to move into third place and stay in the running for a playoff spot.

Australian batter Georgia Redmayne scored an unbeaten 66 alongside her captain Heather Knight’s 29 not out as the pair put on a 90 run partnership for the third wicket.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Redmayne explained how despite chasing a relatively low target she still had to be persistent to get over the line.

“I think I dug myself into a little bit of a hole at the start when I was getting a bit frustrated with some of the dot balls. To be fair I think they bowled pretty well, and it was a tough surface to start on so even though I was wondering if I should retire myself, I just kind of stuck in there.”

Redmayne then explained her game plan and how being dropped by the keeper early in the innings helped to establish a foothold in the contest.

“It was a case of making sure that that their strike bowlers up top didn’t do too much damage and then cashing in on the third, fourth and fifth change bowlers. I got dropped behind early on, so it was nice to be able to cash in on that.”

The left-handed batter also described the approach that is required to chase low totals like the one she was faced with against the London Spirit.

“Sometimes those awkward 110 or 120 chases are harder than (chasing) 150 because you can almost trip over a little bit trying to play it safe or nudge it around knowing you have that time available to you. Show no matter what the total is you have got to go out and bat well. If you play good cricket shots for long enough you should be able to chase (the target).”

The thirty year old wicketkeeper is currently the London Spirit’s second top run scorer for the season only 24 behind England captain Heather Knight on 160 runs.

Their next two games are against the Oval Invincibles and the Northern Superchargers with victory in both meaning a knockout place finish and possibly a maiden title for the Lords based franchise.
