Leicester PL charges could impact Saints

Southampton are among the Championship clubs keeping a close eye on the charges faced by Leicester by the Premier League for breaches of financial rules.

The East Midlands team have been referred to an independent commission for breaking profit and sustainability rules while they were in the Premier League.

If the 2021 FA Cup winners are found guilty, they could face a points deduction either this season or if they are promoted back to the Premier League.

The Foxes are still yet to make their accounts public from their last season in the Premier League, however it was reported that they made a loss of £92.5m, which was a record for the club.

With City flying high in the Championship, a points deduction could help Hampshire based Southampton get back into the top flight.

The Saints are currently sit fourth in the Championship table as they look to make it back to England’s top division, in which they enjoyed a ten-year spell before being relegated last season.

The promotion race is hotting up in the Championship with a four-way battle between Saints, Leicester, Leeds and Ipswich.

Leicester will also be looking to bounce back on the pitch, with only one win in their last five league games. Their next game is to Bristol City away on Good Friday.
