Joey Barton arrested after assault near golf club

JOEY Barton and another suspect have been arrested after an assault took place near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside on Sunday.

Gervase de Wilde, a solicitor representing Eni Aluko in her ongoing libel case with the former midfielder, told a High Court that Barton “was arrested yesterday and is currently being held in custody”.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the victim with injuries to his face and ribs, and he is now believed to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Barton and Gary O’Grady, 50, will appear at Wirral Magistrates Court having been charged with section 18 wounding with intent.

The former England international has been arrested following on assault on several occasions, having previously been found not guilty of assaulting opposition manager Daniel Stendel in 2021, and was last year handed a 12-week suspended prison sentence for assaulting his wife four years prior.
