Kalvin Phillips to start against Italy instead of Jordan Henderson

KALVIN Phillips is set to start for England tonight instead of Jordan Henderson despite only featuring three times for Manchester City this season in the Premier League.

Questions have been raised around Phillips’ inclusion in the squad over James Ward-Prowse and his selection in the starting 11 over players like Declan Rice and James Maddison.

Many fans and football pundits have questioned the inclusion of the 27 year old in the England squad along with Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire but Gareth Southgate still has faith in the players he picks.

Phillips has appeared 29 times for England scoring one goal so he can be considered as a senior player but some feel this isn’t enough for him to be a guaranteed pick for the England boss.

Southgate’s men could cement their path to the 2024 Euro Championships this week with just a point so it’s an important game for the three lions as they look to compete in Germany.

Phillips has been out of favour with Pep Guardiola ever since he joined Manchester City in 2022 for £42 million but has been a regular for England and Gareth Southgate in that time when he’s been fit.

He has had only one start this season which came in a defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup and has only played a total of 77 minutes across the Premier League and the Champions League.

A move away from Manchester in 2024 could be on the cards for Kalvin Phillips as he looks to increase his club football game time.
