As Gameweek Five has now drawn to a close, we can reflect on the six fixtures, who won, is there still a title race or will the bottom of the table fight be something worth keeping an eye out for?
A top of the table clash opened up the weekend for the Women’s Super League.
Manchester United hosted Chelsea. United kept the title race alive, putting pressure on the League giants.
Chelsea opened the scoring first through Weike Kaptein. The 20 year old Dutch midfielder slotted the ball past Phallon Tullis-Joyce after a backheel assist from Caterina Macario.
11 minutes later, the Red Devils found a way past the Blues. Anna Sandberg sent the ball flying into the net, leaving Hannah Hampton no chance of saving it.
Neither team found a way to take all three points for the rest of the game and it was honours even.
Arsenal were the second London side to travel to Manchester as they faced a bitter defeat to Manchester City.
City were the first to open up the scoring through last season’s golden boot winner – Khadija Shaw.
Arsenal replied through Mariona Caldentey just after the second half kicked off. For 15 minutes both teams were held at a deadlock until Dutch defender, Kerstin Casparij equalised for the Citizens.
It was Chloe Kelly who equalised in the 83rd minute for the Gunners, against her former side but this was cancelled out a short 5 minutes later by Iman Beney and Arsenal were sent home with nothing.
It was honours even as Leicester City faced Everton at King Power Stadium.
The Merseyside club scored first through Ornella Vignola – making it 4 goals in 5 matches for the Spanish youngester.
The Foxes left it late, in the 81st minute, Noemie Mouchon beat Everton’s back line to snatch a point.
Leicester City and Everton now both sit on 4 points, pushing themselves slowly away from the relegation zone.
Two goals came in 7 minutes as Aston Villa beat West Ham, leaving the Hammers still searching for their first point of the season.
Kirsty Hanson and new signing, Lynn Wilms put two incredible goals past the London strugglers to give Villa their first win of the season so far.
West Ham face newly promoted London City Lionesses next – could they get their first points of the season next week?
Tottenham piped Brighton to all three points to take them joint second in the league with Manchester City.
Cathinka Tandberg found herself putting the Lilywhites 1-0 up in the 26th minute and for the rest of the game Spurs could not add to their goal tally.
Despite having more posession than the home side, Brighton were unable to take any points away from Tottenham and Brighton went home with nothing.
London City Lionesses got their first home win since being promoted to the Women’s Super League to take them to seventh in the table.
It was Elena Linari’s 89th minute penalty which meant they were keeping all three points in London, making Liverpool questioning what went wrong.
Liverpool now sit in eleventh in the table, winning no points so far this season. Can they turn it around or will they be fighting to stay up in the top flight of Women’s Football in England.
