IN our latest podcast, we dive into the often-overlooked world of the UEFA Conference League with special guest Lee Wingate from The Sweeper podcast.
Lee believes that this tournament is aimed to give smaller clubs a rare opportunity to shine on the continental stage,”UEFA wanted to give countries and clubs the opportunity to play European football.
“Particularly clubs in countries that don’t usually get that opportunity under the pre-existing framework of the Champions League and Europa League.”
We are now seeing more than ever countries get their first ever participants in European football which Lee believes is only a good thing for the sport.
From unforgettable nights at home, to long journeys across Europe, the Conference League is helping clubs tell stories that go even beyond results.
To understand what this competition really means we also spoke to people living it first-hand:
- Oliver Dahle, a journalist, photographer and supporter of Djurgårdens IF, shared what it was like documenting the clubs European journey.
- Jacob Williams, the club secretary of The New Saints, gives us an insight to how Welsh football is evolving with European exposure.
- Louis-Philippe Depondt, the press officer at Cercle Brugge, reflected how the Conference League has reshaped the clubs ambition.
These are not the stories of European giants but instead of clubs fighting for a chance to grow and dream a little bigger.
