MILAN-CORTINA’S very own 2026 Winter Olympics is well and truly underway with the immovable Norway dominating the opening with three gold medals.
A record event with 111 medal events across eight sports, the 25th edition of this iconic competition has seen a bit of everything from the start.
Swiss Alpine Skier, Franjo von Allmen took the first gold of the games holding off the roaring Italian crowd’s very own Giovanni Franzoni and 36 year old veteran Dominik Paris.
Now arriving into Day four which promises nine medal events to sink our teeth into including a huge USA vs Canada women’s hockey as well as the heats to the Short Track Speed Skating.
However, for all of the highs there have been falls. Of course the fall of the American Skier Lindsey Vonn has dominated headlines of the opening few days of the competition. A fractured tibia only 13 seconds into her return from five years out of the sport, was a harsh reminder to the heartbreak that years of work can be broken in just seconds.
For the home nation Italy, they hold the crown for total medals with nine. Two more than Japan. Yet the Azzurri still find themselves in 7th with the majority of their medals being only bronze. Italy will have another chance to add to their collection as they compete today in the Curling Mixed Doubles in the Bronze medal match with Great Britain who are yet to find their first piece of silverware.
Team GB have never won more than five medals in the Winter Olympics and will hope to eclipse this record in these games.
Plenty of action awaits at arguably the largest Winter games the world has possibly ever seen.
