THE Solent Men’s Volleyball team defeated Bristol University at the weekend by three sets to two to remain unbeaten so far this season.

The side are one of two teams to be in this position with Exeter University also maintaining a 100% record heading into the Christmas break with the two teams facing each other in January next year.

Solent captain Jack Lee-Francis explained why he thinks the team have been so successful this year.

“Training has gone a lot better this year compared to last year, we’ve had so many more numbers compared to last year and at least doubled in size.”

The side are looking to improve on their position from last season which saw them finish just outside the play-off positions.

The success of this Solent team is even more remarkable when you add the fact that they’re training and playing without a coach.

Training sessions and matches are organised and run by members within the squad.

One of the returning players from last season Ryan Howell is one of those who helps to lead the sessions and explained why they have improved.

“Quite a lot of us play nationally so we have the experience and discipline. Because we have no coach we like to have fun and not stress like some other teams.”

This Solent team will be hoping to go far in the Conference cup as well this season and have already progressed to the Quarter- finals.

They will be hoping to carry their fine form from the first semester into the second and go the whole season as an unbeaten team.
