THIS past weekend Gemma Mill competed in the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Malta.
Competing in the under 78kg category she came away with a silver medal confidently beating multiple opponents throughout the championships.
Along side studying Gemma is a also climbing the rankings in the Judo scene.
Gemma is currently studying for an MSc in Cyber Security Engineering following a BSc in Business Management.
In September 2023 she became one of 20 young athletes to become a sports scholar at Solent.
Part of being a sport scholar Gemma has been able to access support with strength and conditioning, nutrition and physiotherapy to support her training and competing.
In addition the university also supported her with funding towards getting her to the championships in Malta.
Gemma has only been competing in Judo for the last two years and with the help of the Solent’s dedicated Department of Sport and Health has been able to make a name for herself in Europe. Gemma says:
“Solent has been really good, being part of the scholarship scheme has given me extra support and extra attention.
Also having access to the gym classes here has pushed me hard to get my fitness to the best level it can be.”
Looking forwards Gemma aims to represent Great Britain at the highest level.
“I’d like to compete for Great Britain, visiting and competing in lots of other countries and do this on a semi-regular basis.”
