Sirens Share Spoils With Wycombe in Goalless Draw at Redbridge

SOUTHAMPTON Women were held to a 0-0 draw by Wycombe Wanderers at Redbridge on March 8th. The Southern Region Women’s Football League encounter was hard-fought, with both sides creating chances but neither able to find a decisive finish.

The match began with a poignant tribute to former Southampton Women’s player Lynda Hale, who recently passed away.

Players, staff and supporters observed a minute’s silence followed by a minute’s applause before kick-off, with a second round of applause taking place around the ground in the seventh minute as she wore a number seven.

Wycombe created the first chance of the afternoon inside four minutes, but goalkeeper Jenman reacted well to collect a flicked effort from a low cross. The Sirens responded through wide midfielder Dani Kjaer, who cut inside her marker only to see her effort blocked, before play was briefly halted in the seventh minute due to a head injury to a Wycombe attacker.

The Buckinghamshire side came closest before the break when a looping cross struck the crossbar. Southampton’s best opportunities came from deliveries into the box, a long ball from Lucy Mears flicked on by Chloe Ball narrowly evaded a finishing touch at the back post, while Manisha Kaur sent a difficult volley over the bar from the same area on the half-hour mark. Kjaer also picked up a yellow card before the interval.

The second half saw Southampton push for the opener. Chloe Tedman tested the Wycombe goalkeeper early with a powerful strike from 30 yards, and again in the 65th minute with a long-range free-kick that forced a fingertip save onto the crossbar.

Wycombe threatened late on when a ball into the Sirens’ box caused alarm in stoppage time, but Jenman gathered comfortably to preserve the stalemate.

Despite a competitive afternoon and chances at both ends, the points were shared — a result that will feel like a missed opportunity for Southampton, who were the more threatening side but could not find the crucial goal.
