Lionesses match at St Mary’s sparks renewal of big partnership to boost Women’s football in the city.

THE LIONESSES defeated Ghana last week in a 2-0 victory at St Mary’s last Tuesday yet many organisations in Southampton are working towards boosting the Women’s game.

Most notably a renewal of the partnership between Eastleigh Football Club and the University of Southampton, will offer new opportunities for young women and girls into football.

Led by the newly appointed head of women’s football at Eastleigh, Chantelle Castle has been working tirelessly with Southampton’s Associate Director of Sport and Community Services, Phil Malatesta to widen the scope of inclusion into grassroots football.

“Eastleigh shares our common goal of bringing our communities together through the love of football and physical activity.

“This renewed agreement will give women and children across the region access to high-quality training and coaches, and other invaluable opportunities.”

“It directly addresses the University’s civic goals of improving the quality of people’s lives and responds to the growing demand in our region for accessible sport.”

Examples such as Lucia Kendall, an academy prospect for a decade at Southampton FC who scored the opener at the Saints ground for the Lionesses, will be sure to inspire all those looking to be included in the beautiful game.
