Leadership and Relaxed Environment Key for Solent Volleyball’s Unbeaten Semester

SOLENT Men’s Volleyball team have gone unbeaten for the first semester.

The side are without a coach, which is unlike all the other competing Universities in their league.

As such, it has been down to returning second year players to step up and take on leadership roles in both training and on match day.

This has helped to create a tighter bond throughout the squad, which has taken on almost double the numbers compared to last season, and the feel good factor has been a huge part of their success.

One of these players, second-year Outside Hitter Jack Howell, said:

“A few of us play Nationals, so we’ve got the experience, got the discipline and because we’ve got no coach, we like to have fun and we’re not stressed like other teams.

“We’re relaxed, and we play our best when we’re relaxed.”

The team’s captain, Ryan Lee-Francis, had this to say:

“Training has gone a lot better this year compared to last year, we’ve had so many more numbers, we’ve at least doubled in terms of members of the club.

“Attitude is also a lot better and from last year we’ve had a much better community, so we’re more friendlier than we were.”

The Phoenixes have replicated their league form in the cup, with them defeating Cardiff B’s 3-1 two weeks ago to ensure progression through to the quarter-finals.
