Leander Dendoncker grabbed Villa’s second 5 minutes later to spark jubilant scenes in the Old Trafford away end.
United struck back through Argentinian Alejandro Garnacho, as the winger’s brace brought the reds level in a boxing day classic.
As the game looked to be spiralling towards a draw, Hojlund’s firsts premier league goal gave United all three points.
The win puts Ten Hag’s side up to 6th in the premier league table as their pursuit for the champions league places strengthen.
As for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa they remain in 3rd place but miss an opportunity to widen the gap from the chasing pack.
Hojlund and United will be hoping that the result can boost them to a stronger level of consistency and more premier league success.
